This sculpture on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota represents
the first 150 years of the history of the United States.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln were selected by sculptor Gutzon Borglum because of their role in preserving the Republic and expanding its territory.
Today we celebrate Presidents' Day in the United States,
of which 44 men have served as President.
The original purpose of this day was not to honor any particular President,
but to honor the office of the Presidency.
